Noisy Garage Door? Keep Your Garage Door Running Smoothly This Summer

Noisy garage doors can be caused by any of the many springs, pulleys and cables that make the opening system work. A noisy garage door if not addressed quickly can eventually become a larger problem eventually requiring garage door replacement. As garage door installation experts in Lino Lakes, we would like to offer some of the reasons your garage door could be making noise as well as how to keep your garage door working well all summer.

garage door installation

You can generally expect a garage door to last you for a decade or two after you have a new one installed. But, once your garage door starts to act up, it may not be long before you require garage door installation. Be sure you inspect your garage door on a regular basis. About once a week or so, inspect the garage door itself as well as the mechanisms to ensure everything is working as it should. If you notice a part that is broken, frayed or worn through, call our garage door company for assistance. Many parts of a garage door, especially the springs, should only be repaired or replaced by a trained professional.

Pinpoint the Type of Noise

By identifying the type of noise your garage door is making, you can determine what may be causing it. For example, a loud ticking sound could mean it’s the rollers or a grating noise could mean it’s the coils. The well-trained ear of an expert garage door installation specialist can listen to your garage door and help pinpoint the problem.

Check, Tighten, Inspect

When you hear strange noises coming from your garage door, start by checking, tightening and lubricating all parts of the opening system. Use a socket wrench to tighten the nuts on the track system as well as tighten the opener chain and lubricate the opener track, hinges, torsion bar bearings and springs. If none of these work or if you are uncomfortable performing any of these tasks then contact the garage door installation experts at Premium Garage Door Service for help.

It is important to make sure your garage door opens and closes as it should to ensure it lasts all summer. And, if your garage door is getting old and you would like to look into a new garage door installation to update your home, now is a great time of year to do it!

How to Clean Your Garage Floor

If you are looking around at your garage floor and wondering how you got so many grease, oil and other spots, you might also be wondering how to clean them up. We are a garage door company serving Roseville, and we have plenty of suggestions for you on how to remove these types of stains and other spots and messes.

Grease and Oil Spots

The first thing you want to do is to cover the grease and oil stains with a layer of kitty litter or sawdust. These will help absorb the layer of oil or grease. Just be sure to leave the litter or sawdust on the floor for at least one full day.

After that, take a broom (one with rigid bristles) and sweet up the litter or sawdust and any other dirt the broom picks up. After that, pour some type of dry dishwasher detergent or a concrete cleaner (found at your local hardware store) on the stains. Let the cleaning agents sit for about 45 minutes to an hour and then carefully pour boiling water on it. Scrub vigorously with the broom.

If a stain is particularly stubborn, you can use muriatic acid. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using this type of cleaner, and use baking soda after you’re done to neutralize the acid. Also be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Rust Spots

Use one ounce of trisodium phosphate in one gallon of hot water. Then wet the concrete with the solution, use a broom with rigid bristles and scrub. After that, let the solution sit and soak on the concrete for about 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary.

Cracks

If there are cracks on your garage floor, they can be filled in with epoxy paste. Just be sure to scrape away any excess so the epoxy that remains is flush with the rest of the floor. Let the epoxy dry thoroughly and then you can sand it down so the finish is nice and smooth. If you have larger cracks on your floor, you can do the same thing and that should fill in the cracks as well.

We hope you find these suggestions helpful and useful!

How to Organize a Small Garage

Your garage is one of the most important rooms in your home. Not only does it keep your car safe and out of the outdoor elements, but it can also serve other purposes, like a storage space, home gym, man cave and more. From your garage door opener to your garage doors, the Roseville garage door experts at Premium Garage Door Service can help with any repairs you might need. And we also have some good ideas about how to keep a small garage well organized. Here are a few of our favorite recommendations for how to keep your garage looking good.

Plan ahead

Take a look at your garage and its layout. Get out your tape measure and take some measurements. Shelves are great to add to your garage, especially high shelves that will keep your belongings off the ground. Just be sure to factor in your garage doors when you take the measurements. You don’t want to install shelving only to find out that your garage doors knock them over as the doors are opened and closed!

Shop for shelves

Shelving comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes these days. Be on the lookout for shelving that is made out of a durable material, like metal. You want to be sure that if these shelves are accidentally hit by your car as you are coming or going that they can withstand the impact and still stay upright. You also want to make sure the shelving can withstand temperature extremes, especially here in Minnesota where we have hot summers and frigid winters. Tall shelves are great too, especially if you have valuable items that you don’t want anywhere near your garage floor.

Labels are your friends

There is no point in spending all of this time organizing your items if you don’t label them. The labels don’t have to be anything fancy. Even if you just get white labels and a black magic marker, that should suffice. Try to organize your items in a way that makes logical sense too. So if you organize all of your gardening tools together, try to put those tools next to your mower so you don’t have to look too hard to find them.

How to Keep Your Garage Door from Freezing Shut

Because winter is almost here and the cold temperatures, freezing precipitation and snowfall have found us, it is easy for your garage door to freeze shut. Here is a rundown of what to do in case this happens. And if you need help with a frozen shut garage door, or if you need garage door parts in Forest Lake, we can help! Just be sure you don’t keep trying to open your garage door if it will not open. If your garage door does not open the first time you try to open it, stop trying to open it and try these suggestions.

Visually check the lock and other garage door parts

Make sure your garage door hasn’t been locked. You should also check the other garage door parts for any obstructions that could be hampering your attempt to open your garage door.

Pull the manual release cord

Try to disconnect your garage door from the operator by pulling the manual release cord. Try to open your garage door by hand and check to see if any section of the door or weather seal are frozen or frosted over.

Check the inside and outside for frost or ice

Visually inspect the bottom of the garage door – inside and outside – for ice. If you see any, you can use a blow dryer to melt it. Just be sure to use the lowest setting on the blow dryer and do not hold it in one place for too long or else you could damage the door or weather stripping.

Use rock salt

If it is warmer than 10 degrees outside, you can use rock salt or salt water to melt the ice. Just be careful to clean the rock salt or salt water off of the bottom completely. Rock salt or salt water can corrode the bottom of your garage door and lead to more problems.
